Never mind the politics in the States. Staggering news from Newcastle this morning as the NSW Minister for Aboriginal Affairs and Member for Swansea, Milton Orkopoulos, has been arrested by a police task force on about thirty sex and drug-related charges, some related to minors. Orkopoulos has been sacked from the ministry and instructed by Premier Iemma to resign from parliament while his case is being heard. He makes his first appearance before Newcastle Court this afternoon.
Orkopoulos became member for Swansea several years after I moved out of the electorate, but this is quite a shock. Lots of political implications as a result of this.
(And at the back of my mind I am wondering why so much dirt is coming out on Peter Debnam's adversaries in such a short space of time?)

Milton Orkopoulos jailed
A follow-up to my blog post of 8 November 2006. Milton Orkopoulos was sentenced in Newcastle District Court yesterday to a maximum 13 years 11 months in prison on thirty counts of sex with, and supply of heroin and marijuana to, three underage boys between 1995 and 2006. Orkopoulos will be eligible for parole on 18 May 2017.
Rumours persist of a cover-up by senior state Labor Party figures prior to Orkopoulos' arrest. No official investigation into these claims has been convened.
