It's Midwinter-Midwinter time again.

The rickeyre.com Ashes BoG (Best on Ground) award returns for 2009, as I give votes on a 3-2-1 basis to the best players in each day's play of the England v Australia Test series.

I began these awards as a reaction, in horror, to the establishment of the Compton-Miller Medal for the MVP of the Ashes series.

Named for Billy Midwinter, one of the few players to represent both Australia and England at Test cricket, and centre of one of the most spectacular sports poaching incidents of all time, the ground rules for the Midwinter-Midwinter are explained here.

Shane Warne was my inaugural winner of the Midwinter-Midwinter in 2005 and again in 2006-07. Blog entries tagged "midwinter-midwinter" are threaded here.

Each day's Midwinter-Midwinter points will be announced first on Twitter, generally the following morning (Aus time) around breakfast time, ie after I've slept on it :-)

You can send me your own suggestions for each day's Midwinter-Midwinter votes, either by:

  1. commenting below,
  2. send me a private message on Twitter if you are one of my 200-plus followers, commencing your message with "D rickeyre "
  3. or posting a public message on Twitter, but please include the hashtag #mwmw if you do (#midwinter-midwinter being way too long for Twitter to cope with).
