Rio Day Minus One: Capybaras ate my golf course!

The day before the Olympic opening ceremony, the traditional Day Minus One Men's Soccer Thursday. Meh.

Fiji, a nation whose hopes of a first-ever gold medal rest with the men's rugby sevens team, made their men's soccer debut losing 0-8 to South Korea. Otherwise, as I said, meh. Here's a summary of the day's action.

Hope springs Solo

USA goalkeeper Hope Solo was dropped from the starting eleven for their FIFA Women's World Cup semi-final against Brazil on Wednesday. Brazil won 4-0. Hope wasn't happy. She obviously thought that if she was playing, Brazil would have scored less goals than USA.

Is the Serie A really worth the trouble?

All Italian football is in limbo after the death of a policeman during a riot at Friday night's Catania v Palermo game.

For a league still recovering from the match-fixing traumas of recent uears, this level of crowd violence sinks its reputation even further.
