Twitter's strength has been its simplicity and its distinctive role on the social media spectrum and it is in the process of trashing both of these. Pretending to be snapchat, soundcloud and even substack bloat its platform and diminish its reason for being.
I never met the late Mark Colvin in person but, like many people, I had a number of conversations with him on Twitter over the years. A wonderfully knowledgable and witty person who is being missed by so many people today.

Whycliffe "Dave" Cameron has not exactly had a stellar two years in the hot seat as President of the West Indies Cricket Board. But you'd never know it from his Twitter feed.
Twitpic did not cease to exist on September 25 as recently anticipated.
The Twitpic twitter account announced on September 19 that the business had been purchased. To date the identity of the buyer has not been made public.
We're happy to announce we've been acquired and Twitpic will live on! We will post more details as we can disclose them

I love Twitter. I use it constantly. It is my first line of on-line communication these days and my primary source of news. It has made longer form blogging redundant for me (which is possibly not a good thing).
All of which lends, I think, towards understanding the Things I hate about Twitter (as compiled while lying awake at 5am this morning and blurted out on Twitter around 6 - this post includes some extras):
My Twitter list of media sources that I track for news about South Africa.
The direct link to this on the web is https://twitter.com/rickeyre/media-southafrica although I understand this is hard to pick up on some Twitter apps.
Note that I have included the official Twitter feed of President Jacob Zuma's office in this list.
(This was originally posted in June 2013 when Nelson Mandela was gravely ill in hospital. I have updated in on 6 December 2013 following news of his passing.)
