Will Channel Nine lose its hold on Australian cricket?

For a third of a century, Australia’s Channel Nine has been, to use its long-running advertising slogan, Still The One for telecasting international cricket. This maybe soon to come to an end. Next March, following the end of the 2012-13 domestic Australian season, the current contract to televise Cricket Australia’s home fixtures in Australia will expire. The Nine Network, holders of those rights continuously since 1979, are currently in a battle to avoid entering administration.

An historically great speech from Prime Minister Gillard

History loves great speeches, and much of the time ignores their backstories. Prime Minister Julia Gillard gave a brilliant address to the House of Representatives on October 9, 2012 excoriating the current opposition leader Tony Abbott.

Late-career masterpieces. This week, John Laws

I like promoting on these pages the efforts of elderly artistes in the aftermath of their prime. Today, I present to you Mister John Laws, star of 2SM and syndicated radio stations across New South Wales, interviewed on ABC's 7.30 last night by Leigh Sales with regard to his former stablemate and adversary (often all at once) Belford Parrott.

If it looks like a World Cup, feels like a World Cup, smells like...

The ICC almost bend over backwards to avoid describing the World Twenty20 tournament as a "World Cup". They own the event, they are the world governing body, and therefore it is not a World Cup. To the rest of us, however, if it looks like a World Cup, feels like a World Cup, smells like a World Cup...

On the last point however, I digress. The smell is worse.

Newtown Jets premiers of NSW Cup - a storification of Grand Final day

The Newtown Jets won the 2012 NSW Cup grand final on 29 September at ANZ Stadium with a heart-stopping 22-18 victory over the Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers. In my opinion it was easily the best of the three games on Grand Final day, and gave the Jets their first victory in the NSW Cup since it was reconstituted as the de facto reserve grade for non-Queensland NRL clubs.

Here's a storification of selected tweets and images of the Jets victory, including progress reports of the game and the celebrations afterwards:

Best Paralympics ever? Calling America...

It's seems like a statement of the bleeding obvious to say that London 2012 has provided the best Paralympic Games ever. Regardless of the standard of play, they have captured the imagination like never before, in no small part because they, like the Olympic Games themselves, were conducted by LOCOG. No longer are the Paralympics a forgotten afterthought to the main event.

Massive live TV coverage in the UK through Channel 4, in Australia through the ABC, and elsewhere, but what of the US? Ten hours on NBC. Ten hours over nine days. Edited highlights.
